Could God Do Any Less?

Romans 8:32

David Hill, a missionary to China, needed money to build a chapel in China. His own father gave $2,500 to the missionary society for the purpose.

Now, the secretary of the mission, knowing the rather straiten circumstances of the Hill family, wondered how they could ever give such a large amount. So, he visited the old man and asked him if he could really afford to give a gift as sizable as that. And the older Mr. Hill replied: The greatest gift I ever gave to China was my own son David; everything else has been easy after that.

Well, God, who "spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?" That's Romans chapter 8, verse 32.

If God loved you enough to give His own Son to take your place, to die for your sins, and thus save you from future punishment, will He let you down now and fail to deliver you from your present troubles? If God was willing to give you eternal salvation, will He begrudge help day by day? If you can trust God with your soul, can't you trust Him with your daily life?

One for all. There's one very impressive contrast in the text. It tells us that the Father gave His Son "for us all". Those are the words. I'll read the verse again: "He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all..."

It's not that Jesus died for one man, He died for all of us believers. That doesn't seem like an even ar
rangement, does it? But it's right. Jesus alone is equal to us all. One small gem is worth a wagon load of hay. In an exchange of prisoners, it has often been true that one officer could be exchanged for many soldiers. A prince is exchanged for a host.

Now, let's not try to go into the mystery of the person of Christ. Sufficient to say: He is equal to all of us. God so loved the world, that He gave just oneHis only begotten Son. And that one is equal to the whole world.

The Creator. Why? Because He is the world's creator. "All things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist" (Col. 1:16,17).

And it was this one, the eternal Son of God, that was given for us all. The sacrifice of Christ there on that cross, that sacrifice has in it value sufficient for us all. And you and I may safely trust this mighty Savior.

Now, may I read the verse to you again? It's Romans 8:32: "He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up (that's the cross) for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?"

Whenever a question arises concerning the daily life, the need for today, for the present, let's look back to that great offering, to that great gift that God made. And as Mr. Hill said: The greatest gift I ever gave was my son, and everything else has been easy after that.

And I can hear God say that. Having given His own Son for us all, how shall He not also with Him freely give us all things? o
